Despite best efforts, not all teeth can be saved. Gum disease and extensive decay are just a few reasons why teeth may need to be extracted (removed). During a tooth extraction, the dentist will gently numb the area, then will use special instruments to wiggle the tooth out of its socket. Occasionally, such as when the tooth is severely broken down or is very brittle, additional procedures to move the gums or bone out of the way are required. When that happens, stitches are usually placed to help keep everything in its proper place while the body heals.
