Check-ups at the dental office are important for kids and adults alike. Kid check-ups are very similar to check-ups for grown-ups. The dentist may recommend x-rays, and after those are taken, information is recorded into our computer software. A gentle, kid-friendly cleaning is then completed using toothpaste flavors like bubble gum and cake. The doctor does a thorough exam, looking for things like cavities and crowding or spacing of the teeth; a soft tissue exam is also completed to assess for any pathology or areas of interest. A customized treatment plan is then made after discussion with the parent or guardian. As a final step, fluoride varnish is recommended; it can help prevent cavities and make the teeth nice and strong! After a successful visit, it’s not uncommon for kids to receive a prize to thank them for their help!
A very common question we are often asked is “When should my child have their first dental visit?” According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry a child should have their first dental visit by their first birthday. This first visit is usually a lap exam used to assess and provide early intervention of pathology, decay, or other conditions. We take cues from the child as to when they are ready to sit in the chair and have their teeth polished. Most children are comfortable to do this around age 3.
Please note: a parent or guardian must accompany children under 18 to their appointments.
