A cavity is a bacterial infection that causes destruction of the hard tissues of the teeth (enamel, dentin and cementum). Cavities result from bacteria from food debris that has accumulated on a tooth surface. The bacteria causes the hard tissue to break down, which leads to cavities, or holes in the teeth. The decay needs to be removed and the holes filled in order to stop the spread of decay, which can lead to even more serious dental problems.
At Integra Dental, P.A. we provide fillings to all kinds of people and all kinds of teeth. Depending on your needs and the state of your tooth, different filling materials may be recommended, such as amalgam (silver) or composite (white) fillings.
Regardless of the filling type, the basic principles are still the same. The doctor will gently numb the area and remove the decay (cavity), then fill the tooth and adjust the filling to fit your bite and smile.
